Why Do Evening Rituals Improve Sleep Quality?
Work, smartphones, social media, news and everyday responsibilities can keep our minds active right up until bedtime. As a result, many people get into bed physically tired but find that their mind is still busy.
A simple way to make the transition from daytime activity to sleep easier is to develop a relaxing evening routine.
It does not need to be complicated. A warm shower, changing into comfortable pyjamas, reading a book or enjoying a caffeine-free drink can become familiar signals that the day is coming to an end and it is time to rest.
Our bodies appreciate regularity
Sleep is closely connected to our circadian rhythm, the internal system that helps regulate periods of wakefulness and rest.
Going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time each day helps maintain a more consistent sleep schedule. Repeating similar relaxing activities before bed can also create a familiar transition between daytime and nighttime.
An evening routine does not need to take an hour. Even 20–30 minutes of quieter activity before bed can be a pleasant way to finish the day.
Less screen time, more relaxation
Checking a smartphone before bed has become a normal habit for many of us. However, the issue is not limited to the light produced by the screen.
Messages, news, short videos and emotionally stimulating content provide the brain with a constant stream of new information when we are trying to wind down.
Consider spending at least part of your evening away from your phone. Reading a book, listening to relaxing music, doing some gentle stretching or preparing your clothes for the next morning are simple alternatives.
Pyjamas can become part of your bedtime routine
Changing clothes may seem insignificant, but it can create a clear psychological separation between daytime activities and relaxation.
Changing from work or everyday clothes into soft, comfortable pyjamas can become another familiar signal that the active part of the day is over.
Breathable fabrics are particularly suitable for sleepwear. Cotton, for example, allows air to circulate and feels comfortable against the skin. Choosing appropriate sleepwear can also help prevent becoming excessively warm during the night.
What can a good evening routine look like?
Start approximately half an hour before bedtime. Dim the lights, put your phone aside, take a warm shower and change into comfortable pyjamas. Then choose a relaxing activity that does not require intense concentration.
There is no need to create a perfect bedtime routine with a long list of rules.
Consistency is more important. When the same relaxing activities are repeated each evening, they can become familiar signals that the day’s activities are finished and it is finally time to rest.
